Pearls of Elul 5786 - Day Seven

August 19 | 6 Elul

Every so often, I have a song that runs through my head. Whether for an hour or most/all of the day, even for longer.

Alden Solovoy is an author and a modern creator of Jewish prayers and reflections. He calls such “earworms” Spiritual Walkabout Songs. You can read what he wrote here.

Our tradition says that during the month of Elul, Psalm 27 should be our Spiritual Walkabout Song. It is recited during traditional prayers. You can listen to one of the segments of that Psalm here.

As we go through any day, there are words, thoughts, even songs that we carry we us. Often, they do not need to be vocalized. They live in our heads, our hearts, and our souls.

As this first week of Elul sunsets, and whatever song or songs resonate for you, this is just another reminder to pay attention to the contours, the rhythms, and the sounds of your soul.
