CURIOUS WHY THIS IS AN IMPORTANT ISSUE IN GREENSBORO?
Thousands of North Carolinians have faced the threat of indefinite suspension of their driver’s license for inability to pay court costs. Guilford County has the highest number of indefinite suspensions at 35,000.
Guilford County’s failure to comply with suspensions constitutes 21.2% of the population.
This percentage is higher than the number of suspensions in both Wake and Mecklenburg counties and is the worst in the state.
Criminal Justice Debt is a Racial and Class issue:
Ø Who does an officer choose to pull over for a traffic stop? Is this consistent across all races?
Ø How are lives differently impacted based on one’s financial ability to pay a traffic ticket?
