Getting Involved: Committees

Temple Committees

Committees are fundamental to the operation of Temple Emanuel, and participation by our members is crucial. We urge you to get involved. Serving on one of our many committees is a great way to meet people with similar interests. Below are a few committees which may be of interest to you. For more information on the larger committees, please follow the links at left.

Archives Committee
The Archives Committee of Temple Emanuel seeks to gather and preserve the documented history of our congregation. The archives hold the official, permanent, non-active records of the Temple. These records include membership and financial records, meeting minutes, reports, correspondence and other records. The archives collects genealogical information of the members including life-cycle events, such as births, deaths, B’nai Mitzvahs, Confirmations and marriages, as well as photographs and memorabilia of historical significance. Send email.

Cemetery Committee
Temple Emanuel owns and manages the Greensboro Hebrew Cemetery. This final resting place is used by members of the Jewish faith, their spouses and immediate family. This committee oversees the cemetery, its upkeep and budget, and sets policies concerning the cemetery and the prices of graves. Send email.

Centennial Committee
In 1907, the congregation that would come to be known as Temple Emanuel held its first services on Erev Rosh HaShanah. The 100-year anniversary of that event is right around the corner, and the Centennial Committee is planning the Temple's observance and celebration of this milestone.

Chesed Committee
The Chesed (Caring Congregation) Committee helps create a greater sense of community and belonging for all families within our congregation. Its mission is to provide the support and direction needed for Temple Emanuel to be a spiritual home in which we can feel connected and needed. Through this committee, the congregation is given the opportunity to take care of each other, thus performing mitzvot. Working with Sisterhood and other committees, the services provided include supporting each other in times of life crises, illness and bereavement, as well as celebrating simchas and times of joy. Send email.

Dues Committee
Reviews and approves all membership applications to Temple Emanuel, reviews and approves requests for waivers and reduction of dues and fees when requested in writing by a congregant, promotes collection of outstanding dues, fees and pledges and reviews and accepts all membership resignations. All items must be received on the Thursday before the second Monday of each month.  Due to the need for confidentiality, committee meetings are not open and membership on the committee is by appointment only. Send email.

Endowment Committee
Examines all aspects of future financing to insure the viability of Temple Emanuel.

Fund Raising Committee
Researches and develops potential new fund-raising opportunities. Dinner at Eight, The Rummage Sale and The Temple Emanuel Annual Golf Tournament are Temple Emanuel’s biggest fundraisers.

House and Grounds Committee
Oversees the maintenance and upkeep of the Temple facilities. Send email.

Leadership Development Committee
Seeks to identify and develop potential future leaders of the congregation.

Membership Committee
The Membership Committee is key to the growth and future of Temple Emanuel. The committee reaches out to the community to welcome the newcomers and unaffiliated Jews to our Temple family. Through various social events people are introduced to Temple Emanuel – its history, its members and its programs. These gatherings provide a social vehicle for newcomers to meet others with similar interests and life-styles. Send email.

Music Committee
Oversees the music budget and program of Temple Emanuel and plans special musical programs and concerts throughout the year. Send email.

Oneg Hostess Committee
Helps organize the Onegs following Shabbat services.

Recycling Committee

Religious School Board of Education
Serves as a sounding board for the Director of Education, helps set policies concerning the Religious School, facilitates parental involvement in the school. Send email.

Ritual Committee
Works with the Rabbi to establish ritual policies for Temple Emanuel. The committee follows the Union of Reform Judaism suggestions for Ritual Committee activities. Send email.

Social Action Committee
Seeks to address issues in the community that have a social, political, environmental or religious impact on us as Jews and as citizens of the community. Reviews programs and proposals and then plans accordingly for forums, lectures and action. Works with other committees to co-sponsor candidate forums and provide educational and religious speakers for our community. Our goal is “tikkum olam”…to mend, repair and transform the world. Their big project of the year, Mitzvah Day, has brought together members of Temple Emanuel, Beth David and the Federation to go out into the community and do good deeds. Send email.
