Adult Education
Temple Emanuel endeavors to offer a variety of great learning opportunities for adults every year, so get ready to learn!
MELTON
Last year, Temple Emanuel helped open a branch of the prestigious Florence Melton Adult Mini School in Greensboro. The Florence Melton Adult Mini-School is a world pioneer in the field of adult Jewish education and forms an international network of community-based schools offering adults the opportunity to acquire Jewish literacy in an open, trans-denominational, intellectually stimulating learning environment.
This two-year program is lead by Senior Rabbis Fred Guttman and Eli Havivi and is available by application.
The curriculum consists of:
Year I: Rhythms of Jewish Living, Central ideas & texts which inform our rituals, as well as annual & life cycle observances; and Purposes of Jewish Living, Essential Jewish theological concepts & ideas as they unfold in the Bible, the Talmud & other sacred texts.
Year II: Ethics of Jewish Living, Contemporary issues such as the environment, inter-personal relationships, end-of-life decisions, & stem-cell research seen through the lens of ancient & modern Jewish teachings; and Dramas of Jewish Living Throughout the Ages, Jewish history — from the earliest wanderings of Abraham to current-day Israel — & how key moments in Jewish history influence our lives today.
Each 28-session class begins on Wednesday night, October 5 and runs through late May. Our final session will coincide with the community celebration of Shavu’ot on Saturday night, May 26. Foundations for Jewish Family Living
Greensboro Melton will be offering a special new course for Parents with Younger Children. Foundations for Jewish Family Living is a course of study exploring Jewish values and stories for parents to share with their children
This rich learning experience for adults will provide an opportunity for you to bring the Jewish conversation home to share with your young child. At a time in your family's life when your child is beginning his or her own Jewish education, Foundations of Jewish Family Living provides you with the learning, the language, and the confidence to be a teacher to your own.
Classes will begin following the High Holidays and Sukkot. For more information or to register, please contact Rabbi Andy Koren, akoren@tegreensboro.org, 292-7899, ext 313.
